AMA Hall of Fame member, Dave Gierke, is offering special promotional pricing for AMA members on his new novel. After three decades of research, followed by eight years of writing, Gierke finished his two-volume, lightly dramatized biographical novel based on the American aviation pioneer, Augustus Moore Herring. To Caress the Air: Augustus Herring and the Dawn of Flight – Book 1, takes place in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and chronicles the engineer’s aeronautical achievements, his ordeals, and his triumphs over severe adversity. The book’s setting is the New York State Supreme Court. Herring’s account is conveyed through his testimony during the 1921 civil action trial, Herring-Curtiss Company v. Glenn H. Curtiss, et al., which provides a venue for flashbacks that document his role in solving the age-old problem of manned, powered, heavier-than-air flight. Working with other luminaries of aerial navigation, including Lilienthal, Langley, Chanute and Glenn Curtiss, Herring moved his family from New York City, to Washington DC, to Chicago, to St. Joseph MI, and back to Long Island NY (with brief stops at Hammondsport NY, and Marblehead MA), all in the pursuit of solving the mysteries of dynamic flight.      Gierke states that unlike the Wright brothers, Herring believed that flying models were useful for developing full-size, man-carrying aeroplanes. During the 1890s he designed, built and flew many gravity-powered gliders and twisted rubber-powered craft. In 1902, he engineered and fabricated the world’s first practical internal combustion model airplane engine, which he used to power a successful free-flight model in January of 1903; this served as the basis for Ray Arden’s first engine in 1907. Gierke is a lifelong control-line and radio control modeler. He is also a columnist for Model Airplane News magazine. The Desert Eagles Flying Club located in Idaho Falls, ID, recently received an AMA Club Recognition Award for $175. On June 24, the club hosted their annual Open House. This year, the club decided to make the event a fundraiser for the Idaho Food Bank. Spectators were given the chance to shoot paintball guns at moving model airplanes. For $2, a person was able to take ten shots. Every dollar that was raised was donated to the food bank. Several donors helped with the event. Gary Oswald G&H Paintball let the club use paintball guns and donated the paintballs and the local HobbyTownUSA donated $100 toward a $250 gift certificate that was raffled off. Members of the club also donated fuel and SPADs that were used as the moving targets. While the paintball was going on, there were other activities happening at the event. The club flew model demonstrations, provided free hot dogs and drinks, and did buddy box introductory flights. The club ended up raising $923.80 for the Idaho Food Bank. The AMA would like to thank the Desert Eagles Flying Club for hosting a fundraiser event and making it so successful. The AMA Club Recognition and Reward Program was established to encourage clubs to promote model aviation. Richard Swenson was born on February 24,1926 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Sadly, Richard passed away in 2015. He will be remembered by his passion for aviation. Richard attended Purdue University studying aeronautical engineering where he fueled his love and passion by designing, building and flying model airplanes. Soon after college he joined the US Air Force and then moved to Texas where he founded his own company, SwenAir. In 1967, Richard returned to his hometown Milwaukee where he was a full time employee at Milsco Manufacturing Company. In this position he lead the engineering and design group. Richard is remembered by his friends and family for all of his cool gadgets he had in his airplanes and the tours he took them on. Not only was he a loved family member and friend, he was loved by the Academy of Model Aeronautics. The Academy would like to thank Richard and his family for his beyond generous donation of $202,423.04 toward the International Aeromodeling Center Fund.The gift will benefit our programs and the future of the hobby. His contribution to the aviation community will always be remembered and will be missed by all.
