Senior Director of Government Affairs
Academy of Model Aeronautics
As senior director of the AMA’s Government Affairs department, I oversee the advocacy team that provides liaison with the Federal Aviation Administration, government officials and agencies, zoning boards, and parks departments to promote the interests of AMA members and clubs.
The Government Affairs team is committed to the protection and advancement of the recreational model aircraft hobby. We regularly meet with members of Congress, the FAA, and National Security Agencies. Our team also serves on FAA Advanced Aviation Advisory Subcommittee Task Groups and the Drone Safety Team (DST), co-leads the Know Before You Fly Campaign, is a member of various American Society for Testing and Materials task groups, and frequently participates in a variety of UAS-related work groups. As part of the model aircraft community for over 20 years, I frequently share my knowledge and experience in various media outlets and as a public speaker on UAS-related issues.
I’m lucky to get the opportunity to speak with many of you across the country, whether that be on the phone, at safety risk management panels, or standing side by side at flying sites. Hearing the stories of what the hobby means to you and how it’s played such an essential role in your life allows me to share the importance of model aviation with those on Capitol Hill. It’s your passion and dedication that will preserve model aviation for your generation and many more generations to come.
Sincerely,
Tyler Dobbs
