On May 24, 2025, Executive Director Steve Haston and Communications Specialist Clarissa Poston traveled to Millersburg, Indiana. While there, they visited the Millersburg RC Modelers and a nearby Amish community. Steve Haston stated the following about his visit:
"This past weekend, I had the chance to visit the Millersburg RC Modelers in Millersburg, Indiana—and let me tell you, what a wonderful experience it was! From the moment I arrived, I was met with warm welcomes, genuine enthusiasm, and a shared passion for model aviation that reminded me exactly why I have been a part of this hobby for 40 years.

"The field itself is impressive, a beautiful space that reflets the care and commitment of the club's members. But what really stood out were the people—experienced pilots, enthusiastic newcomers, and community members who clearly believe in the value of this hobby. Their support for AMA and dedication to growing the sport were evident in every conversation.

"At the AMA Foundation, we've made it a priority to meet with clubs across the country, and each visit helps us deeply understand what clubs need and how we can help. We listen. We ask questions. We share ideas. And then, my team and I work to turn that feedback into action. Whether it's supporting local events, exploring funding opportunities, or addressing concerns, AMA and the AMA Foundation are reaching out to help.
"This trip also had a special moment: Clarissa took her very first flight. As she landed and turned, she proudly said, 'I'm a natural.' She really is—and now she's hooked! That's the kind of spark we want to ignite everywhere.

"Thank you to the Millersburg RC Modelers for your hospitality, your dedication to this hobby, and your belief in its future. The AMA Foundation is here to support clubs like yours. Together, we're not just flying—we're building something that lasts.

"After a great time visiting the Millersburg RC Modelers, we were invited to visit a nearby Amish community. A group of AMA members had reached out to me about their interest in becoming a chartered AMA club, and I couldn't have been more excited to meet them in person—on their home field—to help them take that next step. They already have about 20 AMA members, and their numbers are growing.
"When Clarissa and I arrived, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality. About eight adult members welcomed us, along with several of their children, who were boys and girls ranging from toddlers to teens. It was clear right away that this wasn't just a group interested in aviation. This was a family-driven, community-powered club that truly lives the spirit of model aviation.
"Their flying field was buzzing with excitement. They fly it all, from AeroScouts to Giant Scale aircraft. We brought along AMA education materials and a box of balsa gliders for the kids to build and fly, and that turned out to be a highlight all on its own! Later, we watched some of the older kids—maybe around 10 years old—fire up a large-scale airplane and fly it with the kind of skill that would impress any pilot. Watching them, I found myself thinking, 'Wow, I wish I could fly like that!'
"To the future chartered club in this special Amish community: Thank you for welcoming us, for sharing your passion, and for reminding us why AMA matters. We're honored to support you and watch your club thrive."

Clarissa Poston had similar thoughts, stating the following:
"My time with both the Millersburg RC Modelers and the nearby Amish community was fantastic! It was great to get out into the modeling community, meet various AMA members, and learn about how we at the AMA Foundation can assist our clubs, members, and donors to the best of our ability.
"Not only did I get to watch the hobby in action, but I finally got to give it a whirl myself! With the assistance of Millersburg RC Modelers President Bob Curtis, I had a successful buddy-box flight (granted, Bob definitely jumped in more than a few times to make some necessary corrections to my over-excited turns!). I'm looking forward to many more flights in the future!
"During our visit with the Amish community, I had a very enlightening moment. I had brought a box of balsa gliders to share with any children present, and while putting them together, one of the young boys there informed me that I was doing it wrong! I asked him to show me how to do it correctly, and then he put it together and launched it into a much better flight than my own balsa gliders ever took ... and now I know why! Apparently, the extra piece of wood on the tail piece of the balsa gliders is not trash—it's the rudder. Lesson learned!"
At the AMA Foundation, these are the stories that inspire us. They remind us that model aviation is more than a hobby. It's a way to bring people together across generations, backgrounds, and communities. It's education, it's joy, and, yes, it's a lot of fun!
