AMA Foundation supporters show up in a variety of ways each year. With various funds, programs, and initiatives available, the AMA Foundation works to ensure that no matter our donors' passions, there's a way for them to give passionately.
One of the programs available for AMA Foundation donors and supporters to utilize is our Torchbearer Program! This program cultivates a community of passionate individuals committed to the growth and development of our hobby; it allows the power of philanthropy to fuel innovation, education, and inclusivity within our community of hobbyists.
The Torchbearer Program is one that the AMA Foundation is passionate about. We recognize the impact that our dedicated Torchbearers have, and we're grateful for their consistent support. AMA Foundation Deputy Director Rachelle Haughn is especially passionate about the work that our Torchbearers' gifts support, and she shares her thoughts on the importance of this program in the following letter:
"Do you sometimes feel as if you are giving so much but not seeing the fruits of your labor? As a mom, I often have that thought. Relationships, friendships, volunteering, and numerous other things can feel unrewarding for all of us at times.
"I want you to know that being a Torchbearer does not fall into that category. It is one of the best decisions you can make! I hear from clubs, members, and others who have been touched by our Torchbearers' generosity—no matter how much they give per month. I wish I had room and time to share every story with you.
"Many of our current Torchbearers support our Programs Fund through their monthly pledges. One of the big ways these funds are used is to help AMA clubs across the country. Clubs can apply to receive funds through our annual grants, one of which is the Disaster Relief Grant.
"The aid that the Disaster Relief Grant provides is often immediately seen. This grant is awarded to clubs affected by some type of natural disaster. The grant money is used to help fund whatever work is needed to reopen flying sites, which can include debris removal, replacing damaged structures, fixing broken gates, replacing a geotextile runway, and more. Clubs can request up to $1,000 per disaster. (Yes, some clubs have been affected by multiple natural disasters in one year.)
"We want groups across the country that are struggling with the aftermath of a storm to feel like some kind of normalcy is returned to their lives. Having a safe and clean place to fly can do just that.
"One of the many clubs affected by a natural disaster is the Port Saint Lucie RC Hobby Group in Port St. Lucie, Florida. On October 8, 2024, just days before historic Hurricane Milton would hit the southeast coast of Florida, the St. Lucie area had a major tornado outbreak. According to the club, there were at least 125 tornado warnings in that area on that day. The Port Saint Lucie club was caught in the crosshairs.
"Damage was extensive. The list of things that needed to be repaired was long, but with the help of a Disaster Relief Grant, the club was able to reopen roughly two weeks later.

"As you can see, tables, runner mats for an RC car track, and a dozen trees were destroyed. It took club members two days to clean up the trees.
"This is merely one example of the difference that our Torchbearers are making for clubs and members whom they may have never met. These clubs and members know the real value of Torchbearer generosity, and they appreciate it."
Our Torchbearer Program is not just a recognition; it's a commitment to reaching new heights in model aviation philanthropy. The AMA Foundation encourages you to join us in making a significant impact on the future of model aviation, fostering a community of enthusiasts dedicated to the joy of flight.
