I had a very rich uncle who sent me to school, let me cruise the world on many of his “yachts” and who let me go hiking camping and picnicking with his Army in Vietnam. I started R/C flying with a Mambo Special in 1967 and a reed system, graduated to a Kraft single stick system, and flew until I went to Vietnam. After Vietnam, I had two years of sea duty on my fifth destroyer, then three years in Spain, three years in the Pentagon, two more years at sea and then returned to the DC area where I retired from the Navy and I and my son resumed R/C.
I had an AMA number in the 68000s, but discovered that it had been given to someone else during the eleven years that I could not fly, so I am now AMA 108577. I am now restarting R/C in an attempt to let my grandsons fly and get involved with their sons starting out with a foamie (but I have a Mambo Special kit to build with electric power).
I never was able to have the same number of successful landings as I had take-offs, but still enjoy the building part.
