I discovered model aviation later in life, proving that it is never too late to try something completely new.
Before 2023, I had never flown any type of radio-controlled aircraft. At 61 years old, I decided to begin with RC helicopters—perhaps not the easiest entry point into the hobby, but certainly an exciting one. From the beginning, I found the RC community to be incredibly supportive, patient, and welcoming. Experienced pilots freely shared their knowledge, encouraged me through the inevitable challenges, and helped me feel like part of the community.
What began as an interest in learning to fly quickly grew into a desire to give back. I became a board member, Treasurer, and Webmaster for the Superstition RC Helicopter Association, AMA Club #3803. I have also served as Contest Director for our annual event, the Southwest Heli Rodeo.
The Southwest Heli Rodeo is about much more than flying helicopters. Proceeds from the event support a scholarship fund we established at Central Arizona College, as well as the Devil Pups youth program. Being able to combine the hobby I enjoy with opportunities to support education and young people has made my involvement especially meaningful.
My model aviation journey also continues to grow. In addition to flying helicopters with SRCHA, I am now flying airplanes with Catalina RC Modelers, AMA Club #1841, and at Tucson International Modelplex Park, AMA Club #3137.
In only a few years, model aviation has given me new skills, new friendships, and new ways to serve my community. My experience is proof that you are never too old to begin, and that joining an AMA club can lead to opportunities far beyond simply learning how to fly.
