Doug Abel Biography

-A A +A

I started into the hobby a little over 7 years ago; my father had started flying with a friend who'd gotten him hooked in the hobby and my dad asked if I'd be interested in getting into the hobby as well. I jumped at the chance, starting with a racing drone (and I do NOT recommend going that route as a first aircraft; it involved LOTS of crashing on my part LOL).

I quickly moved into flying trainer planes at a local club, where they helped guide me through the process, before I started building Flite Test planes and eventually getting into gliders, then flying wings, and EDF jets. About 2 years ago, I transitioned into flying helicopters, and now fly in a sport level - no hard 3D of the helicopters, but I do enjoy flipping it over and getting low over the dirt!

I've also become a board member for my club, and have helped to promote the hobby as much as I can. For 2025, I've also registered the only National Model Aviation Day event for the entire West Coast, reaching out to local papers and CBS News 8 for San Diego to do some news stories and help promote the hobby. It's all about getting out and having fun, and showing others how infectious it is!
