My very first interest in planes was when I was quite young! Maybe 10 years old! I build quite a few of the Rebal plastic models of many different planes. Then I got interested in the “U” control planes, and started to build a few kits! All I can really remember was that they were called Super Stunt. I built two of them! One quite small, and the other was much larger. This was back in the late 1950s. I did not have any adult supervision, but I tried to fly them, and they both perished on their maiden flights! That discouraged me, and I gave up trying to fly those planes!
Fast forward to the late 1990s! One of the guys that I worked with told me that he was flying Radio Controlled planes as a hobby! That sparked an interest, and next thing I can remember is that I was at his field, watching him and his friends fly these model planes! That got me hooked, and next thing I can remember, I was out at his home field with a trainer. One of the guys gave me some help for a while, and then I was on my own!
The next thing that I remember was getting interested in electric powered model planes. One of the guys at our home field was very much a master when it came to electric models! I listened, invested my time to learn how these models were set up, and started having success on my own!
Now it is 2025, and I am a member of a small RC club in Florida. Some of the guys fly pylon in an entry level, and I got interested in that! They used a plane called a Sky Raider. When China quit making and selling Sky Raider kits, I decided to build kits so that guys could build their own planes. That has kept me busy for a while, but then a friend of mine decided to make a 3 D printed plane. It was such a success that I had to have one of them! The next thing I know, I have two different printers! One uses filament, and the other uses a liquid resin! Thanks to my background, I have used a number of CAD systems, and it was not long until I was making my own parts for myself and friends.
I am 79 years old now, and still having so much fun. And I have all of these friends with a like interest! How could life be any better!
