My name is Adam Sun. I am ten years old, and I live in Savoy, Illinois. I have been a huge fan of flying since I was little. I have flown several RC aircraft before and all of them ended up crashing or being lost. The last one was a drone I received as a birthday gift. After that I really wanted someone to teach me how to fly, so I wouldn't keep crashing my planes.
Luckily, one of my classmates invited me to a fun fly held by the Champaign County Radio Control Club (CCRCC) to watch club members fly their planes. The club's flying field was amazing. It has two paved runways and even a weather monitoring system. It's like a real airport, but just for small planes. The thing that amazed me the most was a miniature jet that was powered by diesel fuel. It sounded like a real jet when it was in the air.
After attending the event, I joined the club and got my very first AeroScout and was assigned to an amazing instructor named Bill. Bill trained me regularly during the first few weeks. I learned every step from taxiing and takeoff to flying and even fixing my plane. After about two weeks, I graduated and was able to fly independently. The day that I graduated was the first time I flew solo. I was a bit nervous at first, but I got better each time until eventually, I was able to fly confidently on my own. I was proud to finally fly by myself, and I started flying outside every Saturday morning. My favorite airplane to fly is my AeroScout because it was my first plane.
I am very thankful to CCRCC for providing such a great environment and mentorship. Flying planes has taught me responsibility and how to take care of what I have. I have made many friends through RC flying. In the future, I hope to be able to build and fly bigger planes along with teaching other beginners at CCRCC. My dream as an adult is to build a flying humanoid robot. I strongly encourage other kids to try RC flying because it gets kids outside and increases their interest in STE(A)M.
