Some noticeable changes are coming to the National Model Aviation Museum in Muncie, Indiana, thanks to a federally funded grant managed through a partnership between the Delaware County Commissioners, Delaware County Convention & Tourism Commission, and the Muncie Visitors Bureau. The museum, located in Muncie, Indiana, has been awarded a $48,000 grant for exterior and interior improvements to the building.
The funds come from the American Rescue Plan-Restaurant, Hospitality & Tourism Economic Recovery Grant Program. “During COVID, like many other museums, our attendance dropped as people were not willing to travel,” stated Michael Smith, museum director. “We are very excited to receive the grant and appreciate the Delaware County Commissioners, Delaware County Convention & Tourism Commission, and the Muncie Visitors Bureau approving our application,” he added. The work has not yet begun, but Michael hopes to see progress soon.
The first change that visitors should notice is improvements to the museum entrance’s awning. New lettering with the name of the museum and its logo will be applied to the blue awning. Over time, the previous lettering has faded. “We look forward to bringing a more unified and modern appearance to our current facility,” Michael stated.
A sign directing visitors to the museum’s entrance is also expected to be added, and the sign that indicates where the Claude McCullough Educational Facility is located is set to be replaced. The main National Model Aviation Museum sign located on north side of building will also be removed and replaced.
Inside of the museum, new technology will allow the aircraft to virtually come to life.
“For visitors to the museum, a portion of the grant will enhance their experience by the inclusion of additional touchscreens featuring videos of aircraft in the collection flying, as well as interviews with modelers who designed, built, and flew many of the models on display. Through the generous donation of Mr. Paul A. Morman, we were able to start this process, and the grant will allow us to further this programming,” Michael shared.
