Quinton Christie Biography

In 1965, Cox started producing the PT19 Flight Trainer Control Line model with the Iconic .049 engine. I was 13 years old, and it was my first plane. I went on to build kit and custom Control Line planes with balsa, paper, and dope, and in 1973, I bought my first Futaba single stick radio system and installed it in a Cessna foam model.

My first flight lasted twenty seconds and I quickly discovered that Radio Control and Control Line flying require completely different skills. The hobby shop where I bought the Futaba suggested I join the local club, the Flying Gators based in Gainesville, Florida. It was there under the tutelage of Ed Smith (aka "the airplane factory") that I learned the very important art of getting my models safely back on the ground.

I am seventy-three years young now and over the years have built and acquired dozens of models, Nitro, gas, and electric. The Gator flying field was moved so I recently joined the Keystone Cloud Dancers which is much closer to my home. Wherever I fly, my home field or when visiting other clubs, I have always found the friendliest and most helpful people you could ask for. I love this hobby as you can enjoy it regardless of the weather. On days when I can't fly, I spend my time building, repairing engines, or charging/discharging batteries. It's a hobby that can last a lifetime where you can experience good natured competition, the thrill of accomplishment, the pleasure of good company, the excitement of the first flight of a new model, and yes, sometimes the agony of a crash. But overall, it's just plain fun!
