In 1984, I was working for a cosmetic manufacturer, and I needed to meet with the engineer to discuss plans for a new product line. When I met with him, I noticed he had a set of plans on his desk for a biplane. He said he was building an R/C plane and wanted to increase the plans to quarter-scale. Two weeks later, I had a Great Planes trainer 40 ordered with all the equipment to get started. It took me around five months to complete and arrived at the Flying Hawks club field to start my first flight.
An instructor took the plane and went over the construction and was surprised on the quality of the build for my first plane. The plane flew great with just some trim on the ailerons. I spent so much time at the field that first year I was nominated and voted the new President. I held that office for the next 34 years. The club permits the property from the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior. I am no longer the President, but the Club is still there. I believe we are one of only five clubs on National Park Service property in the United States. The Club is located in northeastern Pennsylvania in The Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area near Milford Pennsylvania.
