Owen Karmel is from Delmar, New York, and is in the Bethlehem Central High School Class of 2023. He is also an incoming first-year student at Cornell University for engineering.
Owen has loved both the written word and aircraft ever since he first opened a book at a public library and saw a diagram of air flowing over an airplane's wing. He couldn't yet read, so he was looking at the pictures! His parents bought him his first model aircraft (a Super Cub) when he was in kindergarten. This Super Cub quickly met a premature demise, but fortunately, Owen rediscovered the hobby during the spring of 2020.
He has now built and flown multiple models made of foam, balsa wood, and even 3D-printed plastic. He's a proud member of the Flying Knights Model Aircraft Club, and he'd like to thank, in particular, Joe Messi, John Lomonaco, and Eric Williams for their continued support.
When Owen isn't at the flying field, he enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee, singing and musical theater, and reading. He is incredibly enthusiastically grateful for the scholarship, and plans to bring his passion for aeromodeling to campus in the fall!
