Don Cole Biography

To me, I have always thought that to live a good life, you should be a part of something bigger than yourself; however, one needs to contribute time, money, energy, or something of value to be that most important part.

Like many in AMA, I have had a lifelong love affair with flying RC airplanes. My time started in about 1970 after many Control Line flights. For a while, I was a pilot of full-scale airplanes but soon found that to be a very expensive hobby, especially while raising a family. I built an Ultralight airplane to reduce costs, but that had its own set of problems.

In my earlier life, I worked on maintaining the B-52 Stratofortress in the United States Air Force. Later working at Grumman Aerospace, I built sections of the F-14 and the E-2C Hawkeye and did repair work on the OV-1 Mohawk. It wasn't as much fun as RC and left me with carpal tunnel syndrome on both wrists.

I find that I really enjoy repairing RC airplanes as much as flying them. Even though I enjoy repairing the RC planes, it creates a problem; I have run out of space! I can't seem to let a damaged plane go.

My wife Michelle and I used to live in South Florida (Port St. Lucie). A couple years ago, we moved to Jacksonville, Florida, to be near the grandkids. My 11-year-old grandson Rowan (in the picture with me) recently joined AMA and also joined me as a member of Ancient City RC Flyers in St. Augustine, Florida. The club has very recently started a youth flight training program, and he is excited to say the least. We now have five junior members to start the training, and repairs will be needed!

So, I come to the end of this short bio. As you can see, "poor me" is having a great life!
